DX NetOps Smarts Upgrade Services
Smarts Upgrade
The project covers upgrading Smarts installations from version 9.x/10.x to the latest supported DX NetOps Smarts Broadcom release, while preserving the current architecture, integrations, and custom extensions where possible.
Technical Scope
The new environment will include Smarts domains: SAM, IP, ESM, Adapter Platform (OI), Syslog Adapter, Trap Adapter and Notification Adapter, and other Smarts domains if they are part of existing installation.
All components will run on virtual machines with RHEL 9.x or an equivalent OS supported by DX NetOps Smarts.
Key Workstreams
1. Existing Environment Analysis
- Full audit of all four existing deployments.
- Verification of dependencies, deprecated modules, and compatibility issues.
- Inventory of all customizations (certifications, ASL/Perl scripts, automations).
- Review of existing integrations: LDAP/Active Directory, Service Desk/Trouble Ticketing, CMDB, Notification Services, Performance Monitoring.
- VM sizing verification and resource impact assessment.
- Review of current discovery, SNMP Trap, and Syslog processing logic.
- Integrations with WiFi, SDN, SD-WAM networks
2. Upgrade Plan
- Target architecture design for the upgraded solution.
- Definition of migration scope, including exclusions for unsupported features.
- OS/VM prerequisites: versions, patches, libraries, sizing.
- Communication Matrix defining required connectivity with managed devices and integrations.
- Detailed installation and configuration procedures:
- software installation, domain setup, custom certification migration, SNMP/Syslog configuration, adapter configuration, discovery execution.
3. Installation Verification Test (IVT) Plan
A complete checklist for validating the migrated system, covering:
installation accuracy, user access, discovery, monitoring, customizations, device certifications, trap/syslog processing, and integrations (Activ Directory, CMDB, TT, Notification forwarding).
4. Execution of the Upgrade
Performed site-by-site, starting with test/pre-production and then production sites:
Includes:
- Installation and configuration of all Smarts in test/pre-production environment.
- Adjustments to the Upgarde Plan if required based on the results of the pre-production upgarde.
- Installation and configuration of all Smarts production environments.
- Migration of all custom components and integrations.
- Running IVT after installation in each production environment.
- Validation of discovery, trap/syslog handling, and notification flows.
5. Documentation
- Upgrade Plan.
- Installation Verification Test Plan.
- Complete As-Built documentation of the upgraded installations.
6. Knowledge Transfer
Workshops covering: system architecture, software installation, domain configuration, trap/syslog processing, discovery, customizations, integrations, and daily operational administration.
7. Project Tasks
Wingu will deliver:
- Kickoff, requirements gathering, HLD and LLD with Communication Matrix.
- Installation of SAM, IP, ESM, CONSOLE, NPM, and other Smarts Domains
- Configuration of Global SAM, Aggregation SAM, IP Manager, ESM, Adapter Platform, Notification, Trap, and Syslog Adapters.
- Migration of custom scripts, certifications, ASL automations, integrations (TT, CMDB, Active Direcotry).
- Discovery configuration (seed files, SNMP credentials, polling/threshold groups).
- Validation of services, discovery, trap/syslog, notification forwarding, and external integrations.
- Final documentation and knowledge transfer.
